How many of you know that this is the 100th Anniversary of the Jefferson Highway? Not many I bet! The Jefferson Highway was the idea of an Iowa guy back in the 19teens. He wanted to help farmers get goods to market and proposed a Highway from New Orleans Winnipeg. It became known as the Jefferson Highway because a company named Jefferson started running busses up and down the highway. It came thru Iowa to Minnesota, up past the Capital, to St. Cloud, across the 10th St. Bridge, down 5th Ave. I believe, down Wilson to Sauk Rapids and to Sartell. It crossed over the tracks north of the Paper Mill and took the back roads to Little Falls.
This later became Highway 10. 4 sections remain marked in Minnesota. By the Capital in St. Paul, University Ave. in Minneapolis, Wadena and Staples. With the help of Pamela and Jasper Bond we are trying to get road signs put up to commemorate the 100 years. In 1922 they had a huge state - wide celebration in Little Falls. Like Route 66 most of it got lost to development. Sauk Rapids is on board so far and maybe we can get St. Cloud and Sartell too. Pamela would like to have an old car tour and maybe a picnic sometime in August. Other clubs have shown some interest in joining the parade. We probably won’t be around for the 200th Anniversary, so let’s enjoy this one. If you have any ideas or interest - just let us know. Thanks, Bruce Theisen
